Dr. Rosalyn Beecham-Green serves as the director of CHEOP and NC-HCAP. In this role, she provides leadership on strategic planning, policy development, fundraising, financial management, administrative and programmatic planning.

She plans to build on existing programs by developing ways to sustain relationships with program participants throughout the academic year. In time, she hopes to create a continuous pipeline of programs for underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students in North Carolina from kindergarten through college interested in health professions careers.

Previously, Beecham-Green was associate dean of student affairs at Ross University School of Medicine in the Commonwealth of Dominica, West Indies. Additionally, she has held leadership positions at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, The University of Iowa and Howard University College of Medicine.

She earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from The University of Iowa.

Dr. Paula Borden, Ph.D.

Paula joined the NC-HCAP team in February of 2007. As the associate director/college outreach coordinator, she is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the office as well as planning, developing and implementing college outreach initiatives. She serves as the advisor for the NC-HCAP Health Careers Club.

Prior to assuming her current role, Paula was employed with the Morehead-Cain Foundation, an undergraduate scholarship program at UNC, and served as an AmeriCorp VISTA volunteer for the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Paula received a Bachelor of Science degree in communications studies from Wingate University and earned a Master of Arts degree in counselor education from North Carolina Central University. She is a member of the American Counseling Association, the North Carolina Counseling Association, and the National Association of Medical Minority Educators, Inc.

La’Quasha joined the CHEOP team in October of 2016. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and is currently enrolled at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro to complete her Masters in Higher Education.  Throughout her college career she developed a strong passion for creating access and opportunity to college for underrepresented minority groups. She served as a Pre-College mentor for UNC Upward Bound, and founded a mentoring program in Charlotte, NC at a local high school (Minority Advancements).

Upon graduating from college, La’Quasha spent the summer in Europe launching her personal Social Inequality Project to examine that various entities of social inequalities as it relates to unequal distribution of wealth. It was here that she discovered many health disparities, and lack of access to college for various forms of underrepresented students, in the same capacity that is faced here in the United States. This solidified her urge to establish a career that serves to make sure that the opportunity to go to college, obtain advanced degrees, and have equal access to health care is in reach for every underrepresented student. As a first-generation college student, La’Quasha is eager to help make a difference in the lives of students, one step at a time.

In her spare time when she’s not trying to save the world, La’Quasha likes to do yoga and try new foods.

Derrick Kay

Derrick joined the CHEOP Team in August of 2018. As the Assistant Director for the McNair Program, he is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the program while also planning and implementing the McNair curriculum. He also serves on the NSF GRFP Campus Collaboration, seeking to connect undergraduates with NSF-GFRP Fellowship information.

Prior to assuming his current role, Derrick worked with UNC Upward Bound, as a Teaching Assistant at North Carolina State University, and a Humanities Teacher at Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC. Throughout these different educational endeavors, he has developed a passion for widening participation, lifelong learning, and how individuals learn across institutions and environments.

Derrick earned his Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2013. He also holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from Duke University and a Master of Arts in History from North Carolina State University.

Maximillian Matthews

Maximillian joined the CHEOP family in May 2020. As the Assistant Director for the Upward Bound Program, he is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the program. Previously, Maximillian worked at a variety of institutions across the east coast: public, private, for-profit, and community colleges. Maximillian received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Elon University and a Master’s of Education in Higher Education Administration from North Carolina State University. Maximillian has been published by the National Academic Advising Association, National Career Development Association, and Inside Higher Ed. Maximillian’s passions include LGBTQ+ youth of color, abolition, and how marginalized folks strive to dismantle systems of oppression.

Anna Rodenfels

Anna Rodenfels, MSW
Upward Bound Program Counselor


Anna Rodenfels joined the CHEOP team in April 2020. As the Program Counselor for Upward Bound she is responsible for working with Scholars on their emotional and interpersonal wellness to help them thrive in high school and prepare them for post-secondary education.

Before starting with Upward Bound she taught with Teach for America in Henderson, NC which is where her passion for working with students began. After Teach for America, she focused her professional career on providing mental health services to students and adults. She worked in both residential and outpatient therapy clinics where she specialized in helping clients heal from trauma, grow their ability to manage their emotions, and learn skills to create healthy interpersonal relationships.

Anna received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work from Auburn University in 2012. She holds her Master’s of Social Work degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Jeremy Konar

Jeremy Konar, M.Ed.

Jeremy joined Upward Bound as a program assistant in 2020. Prior to moving to North Carolina, Jeremy worked for the New York City Department of Education. He taught as a high school special educator for five years in Integrated Co-Teaching classrooms, and served as Department Chair and Individualized Education Plan Coordinator for a large high school in Queens. In that role, Jeremy focused on focused on institutional capacity to deliver meaningful differentiated instruction in an effort to engage diverse learners. Jeremy is passionate about developing student and parent self-advocacy and dismantling institutional barriers to student and family self-determination. Jeremy graduated with a B.A. from Brandeis University in 2010. He holds an M.S. in special education from Long Island University and an M.Ed. in school building leadership from Columbia University Teachers College.

Carla transitioned to CHEOP in Spring of 2015 from UNC Heart & Vascular Center with a total of 15 years of service as a State Employee. She is a native of Sanford, NC, and currently resides in Cary. In her spare time, Carla enjoys volunteering with a youth football organization and spending time with her high school-aged daughter. Another fun fact is that Carla has launched her own make-up line and clothing business, Top Stylezz.
